RENOWNED CEDARS-SINAI CANCER SPECIALIST AWARDED INAUGURAL ENDOWED CHAIR
Howard M. Sandler, M.D., receives first Ronald H. Bloom Family Chair in Cancer Therapeutics
LOS ANGELES (May 8, 2009) – Howard M. Sandler, M.D., chair of radiation oncology at Cedars-Sinai’s Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute (SOCCI), has been named the inaugural Ronald H. Bloom Family Chair Holder in Cancer Therapeutics.
The endowed chair, presented at a ceremony at the medical center on May 7, will support research into new treatments for cancer. Through its support for the new chair, the Bloom family will carry on its mission to help solve the cancer puzzle. Mr. Bloom dedicated the chair to the memory of Sandra D. Bloom his wife of 35 years who underwent chemotherapy at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the 1980s.
“Dr. Sandler is an ideal recipient for the honor of the first Ronald H. Bloom Family Chair in Cancer Therapeutics,” said Steven Piantadosi, M.D., director of the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute and holder of the Phase ONE Foundation Chair. “As an accomplished scientist and clinician, Sandler will use this gift for new and innovative research that will ultimately lead to better therapies and more effective treatment options for people with this disease.”
Dr. Sandler is an expert in prostate and bladder cancer as well as an authority in emerging technologies used to treat cancers. Prior to joining the faculty of Cedar-Sinai’s Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute last year, he served as Newman Family professor and senior associate chair of radiation oncology and professor of urology at the University of Michigan.
A member of several prestigious professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Urological Association, Sandler has served on more then 50 state and national committees of these and other organizations. He has written more than 160 articles on radiation therapy, primarily prostate cancer-related, in peer-reviewed journals, and has presented at dozens of symposiums and meetings around the world.
Mr. Bloom, who heads Crown Associates Realty, Inc, is a board member of several organizations including the National Republican Jewish Coalition and the Southern California School of Fine Arts.
The Bloom Family includes Ronald’s wife, Lois Feldman Bloom, his daughter, Laurie Herber, son-in-law Chris, granddaughters Stacy, Sami and Maddy, his son, Mitchell, daughter-in-law Bonnie and grandchildren Shayla, Brenna and Jared.
