Kilpatrick Appointed Chair of Cedars-Sinai Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (October 12, 2010)
Expert in high risk pregnancy and advocate of collaborative research joins Cedars-Sinai
LOS ANGELES (OCT. 12, 2010) – Sarah J. Kilpatrick, M.D., Ph.D., a nationally renowned expert in maternal-fetal medicine and women’s health, has been named chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Kilpatrick is currently vice dean of the University of Illinois College of Medicine and heads the university’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
During her 11-year tenure at University of Illinois at Chicago, she led major clinical, research, academic and administrative initiatives, focusing on those that brought together different medical specialties and other health science disciplines, including nursing, pharmacy and public health. As vice dean for the College of Medicine at UIC, she has been instrumental in improving clinical service, recruiting faculty, strategic planning, and enhancing philanthropy to the medical school.
Head of the university’s Department of OB/GYN since 2003, Kilpatrick led efforts that enhanced the quality of patient care, improved the educational program, and strengthened the medical center’s community relationships. Prior to joining the university in 1999, she served on the faculty of UC San Francisco medical school.
Kilpatrick’s specialties include high-risk pregnancy and pre-term delivery, as well as pregnancy complications such as diabetes, hypertension and thyroid disorders. She has published more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed publications and multiple chapters in text books, as well as giving more than 100 invited lectures. Her research interests are clinical obstetrics, including maternal morbidity and mortality, as well as preterm birth management and outcomes.

Kilpatrick has had leadership roles in key national medical and scientific organizations. She is past president of the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, past chair of the Obstetric Practice Committee of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is currently associate editor for the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a member of the executive committee of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Kilpatrick received her M.D. from Tulane University and a Ph.D. in biopsychology from the University of Chicago. She completed her graduate medical training at UC San Francisco.
