William Warren Brien, MD is Executive Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Cedars-Sinai and Director of the Cedars-Sinai Orthopaedic Center. After serving as Vice Chief of Orthopaedics at Los Angeles County (LAC) + University of Southern California (USC) Medical Center, Dr. Brien brought his leadership and surgical skills to Cedars-Sinai. He is a former Chief of Orthopaedics at Cedars-Sinai, and currently serves on numerous Cedars-Sinai committees, including the Medical Executive Committee. He also serves as a lecturer and ward round teacher for residents and medical students at Cedars-Sinai. He is a past Chief of Staff at Cedars-Sinai.
Board certified in orthopedic surgery and as a medical examiner, he is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Rancho Los Amigos Research Award, the Philip D. Wilson Research Award at Cornell University, and the Otto Aufranc Research Award from the Hip Society.
Through his research efforts, he seeks to improve surgical treatment of femur fractures as well as of hip and knee replacements. He has presented nearly 100 scientific papers and exhibits and has authored numerous articles and abstracts.
Dr. Brien is a member of the Orthopaedic Research Society, the Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Association and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He serves on the Board of Councilors for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
After receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Southern California, Dr. Brien earned his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1983. He completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at the LAC/USC School of Medicine in 1988, and he completed a fellowship in Adult Reconstructive Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Brien was an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at USC and Director of the Joint Replacement Program and was an Associate Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, Irvine.
