Robert McKenna, Jr, MD, is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is widely respected in the medical community as one of the most knowledgeable and experienced thoracic surgeons in the field.

For 10 years, Dr. McKennna was an assistant professor of thoracic surgery at the University of Southern California.

An avid researcher, Dr. McKenna served as the principal investigator in the National Emphysema Treatment Trial. He has written more than 200 peer-reviewed journal articles, abstracts and book chapters on topics in his specialty, including minimally invasive surgeries for lung cancer, emphysema, esophageal disorders and chest wall disorders.

Dr. McKenna is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American Association for Thoracic Surgery and the Western Thoracic Surgical Association.

Dr. McKenna began his training at the University of Southern California, receiving a bachelor of science degree in 1972 and graduating with a medical degree in 1977. He completed a residency in surgery at Stanford University Hospital in 1982 and a residency in cardiothoracic surgery in 1987 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Children's Hospital and Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center. Furthering his professional training, Dr. McKenna completed a thoracic surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Tumor Institute, where he remained on staff for two years.
