Sarah J. Kilpatrick, MD, PhD is the Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Associate Dean of Faculty Development at Cedars-Sinai. She holds the Helping Hand of Los Angeles Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Kilpatrick earned a bachelor's of science with Honors from Newcomb College, a doctorate in biopsychology from the University of Chicago and a medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine. She completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology and a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she went on to serve as faculty for eight years.
In 1999, Dr. Kilpatrick was recruited to the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) to be the Division Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and she rose through the ranks, becoming head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2003. She also served as President of the medical staff at the UIC Medical Center in 2005 and Vice Dean for the College of Medicine at UIC in 2006.
Dr. Kilpatrick is the author of more than 70 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and review papers and is an Associate Editor of American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and on the editorial board for Contemporary Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Her clinical and research interests include very preterm birth management and outcomes, maternal morbidity and mortality and pharmacokinetics of therapeutic drugs in pregnancy and labor. She has recently been on National Institutes of Health (NIH) study sections and as a member of the Illinois Maternal Mortality Committee. She worked with the state of Illinois to review maternal deaths and create education programs on maternal hemorrhage. Dr. Kilpatrick is a mentor on the NIH funded K30 grant in the UIC School of Public Health and the Program Director in an NICHD-funded K12 grant for Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) in the UIC College of Medicine.
Dr. Kilpatrick has received numerous awards for her teaching and service, including the UCSF Outstanding Academic Faculty Award, the APGO and CREOG Excellence in Teaching Awards at UIC and the March of Dimes Jonas Salk Award for Physician Leadership. She was selected as Friend of Illinois Nurse Midwives Award ACNM, Illinois Chapter, and Fellow of the Institute of Medicine of Chicago. She is consistently included among Best Doctors in America (2003-2010).
Dr. Kilpatrick is a member of many national organizations and has held numerous leadership positions in these organizations. She was on the Maternal Fetal Medicine Division of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG), and is on multiple committees for the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG). ACOG represents the over 50,000 obstetricians/gynecologists in the United States and sets practice standards. She served as Chair of the Obstetric Practice Committee and is currently Vice Chair of the Obstetric Practice Bulletin Committee and on the Executive Committee for ACOG. In 2010 she was President of the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM), the premier national scientific organization for her specialty.
