Stephen Shiao, MD, PhD

Radiation Oncology

Stephen Shiao, MD, PhD is a radiation oncologist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Cedars-Sinai’s Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute.

Dr. Shiao’s primary clinical and research interests are in breast and central nervous system (CNS) oncology. He has extensive background in the use of advanced radiotherapy techniques, such as image-guidance and stereotactic radiosurgery and has published multiple papers on how to utilize these techniques to enhance clinical outcomes.

Dr. Shiao’s main research focus is the development of immunotherapy for cancer. His primary goal is to identify immune pathways to target in combination with traditional cytotoxic therapies (chemotherapy and radiation) in hopes of bolstering the efficacy of traditional treatments while minimizing additional toxicity. He currently studies the role of macrophages in the inflammatory cascade following cytotoxic therapy in a murine model of breast cancer in hopes of translating these findings to an early phase clinical trial.

Dr. Shiao has published numerous research articles, abstracts and book chapters. His research has appeared in peer-reviewed journals, such as the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Genes and Development, Journal of Immunology, Annual Review of Immunology, Transplantation, Journal of Mammary Gland Biology, International Journal of Radiation, Biology and Physics and Physics in Medicine and Biology. He is the recipient of several awards, including the Conquer Cancer Foundation of ASCO Young Investigator Award, ASTRO Clinical/Basic Science Research Award and the RSNA Roentgen Research Award.  Dr. Shiao is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society for Radiation Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Brachytherapy Society and the Radiological Society of North America.

After graduating with honors from Yale University, Dr. Shiao earned his medical degree and doctorate degrees in immunobiology from the Yale University School of Medicine. He completed his internship in internal medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital before completing his residency training in radiation oncology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where he also served as chief resident.
