Psychiatry - Addiction

The Fellowship, anchored in the adult Psychiatry Residency and the Child Fellowship programs, utilizes clinical resources in the 68 bed Thalians Mental Health Center, the 850 bed Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, as well as multiple on-site outpatient programs and community residential and outpatient treatment centers. The Fellowship is ACGME accredited to provide ABPN board certification in addiction psychiatry.

Theoretical Background

The Fellow is trained to utilize the bio-psycho-social model and to become familiar with addiction treatment modalities including pharmacological, cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, stages-of-change, motivational, network and family, and 12-step therapies.

Clinical Resources

ADULT

Outpatient Individual: The Cedars-Sinai Addiction Psychiatry Clinic.

Outpatient Group: The Cedars-Sinai Dual Diagnosis Intensive Outpatient Program (DDIOP).

Inpatient: 51 general psychiatry beds.

Consultation-Liaison: The 850 bed Cedars-Sinai Medical Center¿s 6 Intensive Care Units, Departments of General Internal Medicine, Surgery, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynecology and specialty units including the High-Risk Maternal/Fetal Unit, AIDS-Immune Disorders Center, Oncology, 2 Rehabilitation Units, the Neurosurgical Institute, the Pain Center, the Multi-Organ Transplantation Service, and the Ambulatory Care Clinics

Community Residential a facility for dually diagnosed males and females.

CHILD AND ADOLESCENT

Cedars-Sinai Outpatient: Early Childhood Program, Child and Adolescent Treatment programs.

Psychological Trauma Center: A school based program providing prevention and early intervention services to children in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

GERIATRIC

Inpatient and Outpatient: Alcoholism, drug abuse and prescription medication abuse in geriatric inpatients and in the Seasons IOP.

FORENSIC

Los Angeles County Jail: Opportunities for evaluation and treatment of inmates housed in Twin Towers Correctional Facility.

Teaching

The Fellow works closely with PGY 1-4 Psychiatry Residents, Medicine and Surgery Residents, and UCLA Medical Students.

Research

The Fellow attends literature reviews and case discussions within the Research Division of the Dept. of Psychiatry and may participate in medication trials, neuro-endocrine (e.g. stress) and neuropsychiatric studies of stimulants, alcohol, nicotine and club drugs.

Education

In addition to direct supervision, lecture series, and general didactic activities throughout fellowship training, fellows are assisted in developing presentations for local and national meetings, and are provided with protected time for conference attendance.
