Psychosomatic Medicine

Psychiatry – Psychosomatic Medicine

Greater Los Angeles VA Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center have two positions for a one-year, ACGME accredited fellowship  in Psychosomatic Medicine. Assignments at both Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the VA Medical Center will provide the fellow the opportunity to gain expertise in inpatient and outpatient Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, with opportunities to develop clinical research interests, and supervise trainees in an academic setting.

Theoretical Background and Mission

The Fellow is trained to utilize the bio-psycho-social model and to become familiar with a variety of treatment modalities including pharmacological, cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, group and family interventions. We believe that Psychosomatic Medicine contributes an essential element in all multi-disciplinary teamwork in the medical center. We advocate for the special needs of mentally ill patients in non-psychiatric medical care settings. We improve the care of medical ill patients by reducing emotional barriers to care.

Our casework is usually complex and challenging. Our medical centers ( both  GLA-VA and Cedars-Sinai ) are centers of excellence for state-of-the-art clinical care, education and research. We value completeness, accuracy and an appropriately nuanced analysis in each and every consultation. We are able to provide the fellow the time and resources to meet these expectations. Training is oriented toward preparing the fellow for practice in an area of psychiatry specific to Psychosomatic Medicine with leadership opportunities in teaching and scholarship in our sub-specialty.

Clinical Resources

VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System is the largest, most complex healthcare system within the Department of Veterans Affairs. There are 1.4 million veterans in the GLA service area. GLA is affiliated with both UCLA School of Medicine and USC School of Medicine, as well as more than 45 colleges, universities and vocational schools in 17 different medical, nursing, paramedical and administrative programs.

The 850 bed Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s  is the largest academic medical center in the western United States, with more than 350 residents and fellows participating in over 60 graduate medical education programs.

Teaching

The Fellow works closely with Medicine and Surgery Residents, and UCLA Medical Students. In our outpatient primary care service there are opportunities to provide supervision and didactic presentations to PGY 3 Psychiatry Residents, Medicine and Surgery Residents, and UCLA Medical Students who are performing psychiatric evaluations. Teaching activities by the Fellow are  required by our program.

Scholarship

The Fellow is required to develop skills in scholarship by producing either a paper appropriate for peer reviewed publication or proposal for research. Regular meetings with faculty will support and facilitate this objective.

Education

In addition to direct supervision, lecture series, and general didactic activities throughout fellowship training, fellows are provided with travel and tuition to attend the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine in November.
