Fellowship information

Clinical Responsibilities

  • 50 weeks, once a week - LA County Harbor UCLA Medical Center (1st year fellows only)  
  • 100 weeks, .5 day/month - Los Angeles Free Clinic - Arthritis Clinic
  • 100 weeks, .5 day/month - Venice Family Clinic – Arthritis Clinic
  • 100 weeks, once/week - Outpatient Rheumatology Clinic - CSMC
  • 50 weeks, once/week - VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System - Arthritis Clinic (2nd year fellows only)
  • 80 hour work week, 1 day off in 7

The above outpatient clinical care experience is beyond that listed as a minimum ACGME requirement and is intended to enable fellows to participate in the diagnosis and treatment of the broadest range of severe rheumatic complaints and diseases with high quality supervision.  The program is designed to enable the fellow to gain confidence in his/her ability to be responsible for the care of patients with rheumatic disease.  Each clinic exposes to the fellow to unique health care delivery challenges while emphasizing continuity of care in an individualized setting.

Clinical Training Track and Program Year 1

While the clinical program will vary slightly from year to year, the typical schedule is as follows:  Inpatient Rheumatology Consultation Service, including weekly Chief Rounds (CSMC) - 9 months, Supervised Research Experience (CSMC) - 3 months.

Clinical Training Track and Program Year 2

Supervised Research Experience concurrent with Elective Rotations/Private Practice Experience (CSMC) will take place during the 12 months.  Elective rotations include but are not limited to imaging, laboratory diagnosis, procedures (EMG, etc.), pediatrics, office orthopedics, and selected rotations in the private offices of attending staff.

Clinical Training Track and Program Year 3

Fellows have an option to do a third year if they wish to pursue an academic career.  Available are structured and mentored programs in clinical, translational, and basic science research under the auspices of the Graduate Program in Health Sciences at CSMC.  The ability to earn Master’s and even Ph.D. degrees are made available to the trainees.
