Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers a four-year program accredited by the Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

The Cedars-Sinai program has obtained ACGME approval for six residents at each level and is designed to offer increasing levels of responsibility.

The first year of residency provides a broad experience in obstetrics and gynecology with rotations in general obstetrics, general gynecology, and gynecologic oncology. Additionally, first-year residents pursue educational experiences in ultrasound, breast clinic, surgical intensive care, ambulatory and emergency medicine. The interns may also spend a 2-3 week introductory rotation at an affiliated hospital, California Medical Center.

At California Medical Center, the residents are exposed to a large number of high risk obstetrics patients and gain some gynecology experience.  California Medical Center has approximately 4,500 deliveries a year. Residents under the supervision of faculty are responsible for and involved in most of these deliveries.                                                                                                                                                                           The second year of residency includes rotations in obstetrics, gynecologic surgery, gynecologic oncology, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. The residents spend approximately 3-4 months California Medical Center. Other educational rotations are neonatal intensive care unit, anesthesia and an introduction to urogynecology & reproductive endocrinology.

The third year residents spend most of the year on gynecology, obstetrics, gynecologic oncology and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. They rotate for approximately 3-4 months at California Hospital Medical Center. There is abortion/family planning rotation with Planned Parenthood.

The third-year residents spend 8-10 weeks of active participation in the gynecology service at Kaiser Permanente, a well-established HMO. This provides the resident experience with managed-care patients while extending their surgical experience.

The third year residents also have an elective rotation which is planned according to the resident’s needs, such as international experience, research, rotations in other institutions, and fulfilling procedural requirements.

The chief resident (fourth) year includes 4-5 weekly blocks of ambulatory, obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive endocrinology and urogynecology rotations. The chief resident supervises junior residents and acts as a junior consultant on the service while under guidance by faculty.

The objective of our residency training program is to provide a diverse and in-depth experience for each resident so that upon completion of the program they will have the ability to practice competently and independently with the confidence and skills required to enter clinical practice, urban or rural, or pursue an academic or administrative career with a sincere interest in improving health care for women within a  patient safety culture environment.

A large number and variety of patients are seen at the residents’ continuity clinic which is held offsite in conjunction with the Saban, Los Angeles Free Clinic, Inc., a highly regarded charity clinic serving the underserved. Residents are assigned to their own continuity clinic. There are subspecialty clinics for high-risk obstetrics, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, urogynecology and gynecologic oncology. There is also a resident run subspecialty clinic at California Hospital Medical Center for high-risk obstetrics.
