Liver Cancer at the Cancer Institute
The Cedars-Sinai Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation offers a full spectrum of medical and surgical options for diagnosing and treating liver cancer. Treatment is provided both for persons whose cancer originated in the liver and for those who have cancer that has spread from another site to the liver.
The center's multidisciplinary team is one of the world's most experienced in liver cancer treatment and liver transplantation. Leading the team are Andrew Klein, MD, Director of the Comprehensive Transplant Center, and Steven D. Colquhoun, MD, Surgical Director of Liver Transplantation. Liver experts work closely with specialists at the Carcinoid and Endocrine Tumor Program to surgically treat cancers of the liver.
Patients who come to Cedars-Sinai for treatment of liver cancer are cared for by a team of experts that include hepatologists, pathologists, radiologists, surgeons, specially trained nurses, case management coordinators and support groups.
The doctors and researchers at the center are committed to staying at the forefront of investigation and research in hepatobiliary disease. Integrated programs offer comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for newly diagnosed patients as well as those who have tried conventional treatment and surgery without success. Center physicians are expert at chemoembolization and radio frequency ablation techniques for the treatment of liver disease. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy for liver disease are offered through the Samuel Oschin Cancer Center.
Breaking New Ground With Innovations in Treatment
The Cedars-Sinai Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation has a long history of innovation in treatment, including:
- Minimally invasive surgery that allows patients to heal faster with less pain fewer risks of complications than traditional surgery
- Radiofrequency ablation of liver tumors
- Being one of the first medical centers in the country to perform living donor liver transplants
Currently, Cedars-Sinai is one of only a few institutions in the world that is investigating artificial liver devices.
