Families and friends are encouraged to donate blood for anyone who is having surgery at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, and our pediatric patients are no exception. Typically, patients need blood and platelets for cardiac surgery. We welcome all friends and family to come to the Blood Donor Facility to determine if they are eligible to donate blood and or platelets. The Blood Bank will then test the blood and see if it is compatible with the patient. Direct donated blood that is not used for the patient after 30 days will be released for use for any patient who may need a transfusion.
Prior to donating blood for a specific patient, you need an order from the physician. For the pediatric cardiac patients, the Blood Donor Facility will have the order faxed ahead of time. If there are questions, please contact the pediatric cardiac nurse practitioner at (310) 423-7140 or the cardiothoracic surgery office at (310) 423-3851.
Blood donations should be done within 3 weeks of the scheduled surgery, but no later than 3 days before. Platelets need to be donated exactly 4 or 5 days before the scheduled surgery. Please see the link to the Rita and Taft Schreiber Blood Donor Services for hours and how to make an appointment.
Donors may call the Blood Donor Facility 5 days after their donation to find out what their blood type is.
