Computed Tomography (CT) Scans

CT of the heart.

Computed tomography (also known as a CT or CAT scan) uses a narrow beam of X-rays and high-powered computers to generate images of bones and soft-tissues in the body. Below is a list of the most-common CT procedures offered at the S. Mark Taper Foundation Imaging Center. On each page you can find detailed information about the procedure and what to expect if you are coming for an exam. The exams are listed by the part of the body.

A volume rendering (VR) of a three-dimensional set of computed tomography (CT) images shown as a two-dimensional projection. In this case, extremely thin slices were created from the original scan and sent to a separate computer, which transformed them into these 3D images. The surgeon then used these images to aid in surgical planning to repair fractures, including one clearly visible in the jaw and others on the bridge of the nose and the outer edges of the eye sockets.
