X-ray and Fluoroscopy
Many x-ray and fluoroscopy procedures, such as bone and chest x-rays do not require any preparation. The exceptions include: Barium Enema, Upper GI and Upper GI Small Bowel, Esophagram, and IVP (Intravenous Pyelogram; kidney X-ray.) To prepare for these exams, please see below.

Barium Enema
(exam time: 60 min; visit time about 90 minutes)- If you are on a salt-restricted diet or have severe renal insufficiency, DO NOT use the preparation instructions below. You should consult your physician for how to prepare for this exam.

4:00 pm | Drink one (1) full 8 fl. oz glass of water |
Dinner: | |

5:30 pm | 10 oz. bottle of Magnesium Citrate Oral Solution |
6:00 pm | Drink one (1) full 8 fl. oz glass of water |
7:00 pm | Drink one (1) full 8 fl. oz glass of water |
7:30 pm | Take two (2) 5 mg Dulcolax (Bisacodyl tablets) with an 8 fl. oz glass of water. DO NOT CHEW TABLETS |
8:00 pm | Drink one (1) full 8 fl. oz glass of water |
9:00 pm | Drink one (1) full 8 fl. oz glass of water. Do not eat after 9:00 pm. |
*Day of Procedure : Clear liquids only on the day of your exam. Do not eat or drink anything for 4 hours before your exam.
Day Prior to Procedure: PEDIATRIC
- Patients younger than 4 years - No preparation
- 4 years to 16 years: Clear liquid dinner the day before the procedure. On the day of the exam, clear liquids only.

Upper GI and Upper GI Small Bowel Prep
(exam time: 30-120 minutes; visit time about 90 minutes to 3 hours)Pediatric: Please try to withhold feeding before the exam so your child arrives hungry.
- (4 years - 16 years): Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before the exam.
- Adults: Do not smoke, drink or eat anything including gum and mints after midnight the night before the exam.
Esophagram
(exam time: 45 min)- Do not smoke, drink or eat anything including gum and mints after midnight the night before the exam.
IVP (Intravenous Pyelogram; kidney X-ray)
(exam time: 60 min; visit time about 1 1/2 hours)- Adults: Do not eat or drink for 4 hours before your procedure.
- Pediatric Patients (newborn-16 years): Do not eat or drink for 2 hours before your procedure.
