Interview Process

The interview day begins with an overview of the program and an opportunity to ask one of the program co-directors (Drs Kahn and Tcherniantchouk) questions regarding program specifics; there may be more than one applicant attending this orientation to the program. This is followed by meeting with the Chair of the Department (Dr. Amin), who shares his view of Pathology Resident Education at Cedars-Sinai, the departmental and institution missions, and the future of pathology as a specialty. The applicant then has individual interviews with members of the faculty, including the program directors. Lunch and a departmental tour are done with several residents, with ample opportunity to discuss the program with current housestaff members. The interview day concludes with one or two final faculty interviews.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is a 950-bed quaternary care facility for which medical education always has been a core mission. The Medical Center supports a Level 1 trauma center and a multi-organ transplant program, including heart, lung, liver, kidney, bone marrow and pancreas. There are many Centers of Excellence and Institutes within Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, which provide outstanding case material in clinical and anatomic pathology from patients of all ages. In addition to the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine's program, Cedars-Sinai's Graduate Medical Education program offers ACGME accredited residency programs in virtually all areas as well as many subspecialty fellowships. Cedars-Sinai's Medical Library contains 11,000 volumes and 400 print and online subscriptions. Also available are the UCLA Medical Center's library materials.

Within the Pathology Department, each resident is assigned his or her own desk and microscope for the year, and also is issued a computer with Internet access and all pathology software applications. The departmental library contains volumes covering all specialty areas, as well as 10 pathology journals. Study sets are available in surgical pathology and cytopathology. Surgical pathology is consolidated on one floor, with the recent addition of a new Intraoperative Consultation Suite. The other areas of anatomic and clinical pathology are located on other floors in the main building. There are four Pathology Assistants who participate in gross dissection daily, and the grossing room has an ample number of grossing stations. The autopsy area is spacious with modern equipment, and Clinical Pathology has up-to-date, modern equipment in all areas. In both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, the close proximity of resident desks to faculty offices helps facilitate consultations and educational opportunities.
