Medical Student Education Programs

As an integral teaching site affiliate with the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), medical students come to Cedars-Sinai for course credit as early as their first year.  Our Introduction to Surgery selective, offered twice a year, is one of the most popular courses at the medical school.  Over 50 students apply for 10 spots per semester.

Year 3 medical students rotate in our Department of Surgery for their mandatory core general surgery clerkship.  Four students rotate every 3 weeks, joining our residency teams in patient care. In the last two years, Cedars-Sinai has been ranked by students to be one of the top two sites at UCLA’s medical school based on operative experience and teaching.

Each summer, approximately 10 UCLA medical students participate in research with our faculty and attendings sponsored by summer research internship grants.  In addition, another 10 medical students perform research at Cedars-Sinai throughout the year.

Year 4 medical student rotations are open to visiting medical students from across the nation.  Students have a choice of 10 different experiences in various surgical specialties.  Each year, approximately 25 students come to Cedars-Sinai for their sub-internship experience.
