Adult Congenital Urology Program

Share

Introduction:

Many childhood urologic problems require lifelong management, but adolescents and adults born with these disorders often can’t find doctors to care for them.  Children’s hospitals are usually not able to admit adult patients and adults are understandably uncomfortable in a children’s health care setting.  This leaves this complex group of patients with very few places to turn for their ongoing urologic care.  Cedars-Sinai meets this need, since we are a full-spectrum general hospital with pediatric urologists and adult urologic specialists on our staff. Our Adult Congenital Urology Program combines the unique skills of pediatric urologists, adult reconstructive urologists, endourologists and andrologists to comprehensively manage patients with congenital disorders as they transition into adolescence and beyond. Some of the conditions we treat include:

  • Urethral strictures after childhood hypospadias repair
  • Infertility in men born with undescended testes
  • Infertility and incontinence in adults with repaired bladder exstrophy
  • Neurogenic bladder from myelomeningocele
  • Vesicoureteral reflux in adults
  • Disorders of sex development, such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia
  • Urinary stone disease in patients with congenital urologic disorders

About the Program:

The Adult Congenital Urology Program is directed by Dr. Barry Duel, in association with Dr. Andrew Freedman.  Our pediatric urologists perform an initial assessment of each new patient. When appropriate, referrals can then be arranged to an appropriate adult specialist within our program.  These specialists include experts in endourology and stone disease (Dr. Gerhard Fuchs), female urology (Dr. Karyn Eilber), adult urologic reconstruction (Dr. Jennifer Anger) and male infertility (Dr. Howard Kim).   When surgery is needed, it is done as a collaborative effort among our team, to insure the most up-to-date treatments and best outcomes.
