Electrophysiology Study and Procedure Volumes at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute
Electrophysiology studies help cardiologists at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute observe, diagnose and treat the electrical activities of the heart. Such studies are used to evaluate irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias), abnormal electrocardiograms, assess the risks of arrhythmias in the future, evaluate the potential effects of certain types of drug therapy as well as treating certain heart conditions.
Volumes and Types of Electrophysiology Studies Done
As part of the ongoing monitoring of the quality of care given to patients undergoing electrophysiology studies, the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute monitors the number and type of electrophysiology studies done. The table below reflects the volume and type of electrophysiology studies done at Cedars-Sinai over the past three years.
|Electrophysiology Studies and Procedures by Type Done at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute||Jul 2009-|
|Jul 2010 -|
|Jul 2011 -|
|Ablation procedures (svt / other svt, atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter)||444||493||420|
|Pacemaker and cardioverter defibrillator implantation||931||904||704|
Proportion of Procedures Done on an Outpatient Basis
When a procedure can be done on an outpatient basis (without an overnight stay in the hospital) it generally is less invasive, less painful and has fewer complications during recovery. Whether a procedure can be done on an outpatient basis depends on the procedure, the patient's general health and whether there is a risk of complications following the procedure. The table below compares the number of inpatient and outpatient electrophysiology studies done at Cedars-Sinai.
|Outpatient and Inpatient Electrophysiology Studies and Procedures Done at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute||Jul 2009 -|
|Outpatient procedure volume||1,200||1,186||913|
|% Outpatient procedures||62%||60%||57%|
|Inpatient procedure volume||733||781||689|
