The Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute is a national leader in percutaneous valvular interventions. As one of the highest volume centers in the country, Cedars-Sinai brings together a highly experienced team, which includes interventional cardiologists, radiologists, and cardiac surgeons.
The advances pioneered at Cedars-Sinai in catheter-based aortic valve replacement and mitral valve repair are reaching more patients through specialized clinical trials at Cedars-Sinai. These efforts offer patients a less invasive approach to life-saving valve replacement and repair.
Volumes of Percutaneous Valve Procedures by Type
The table below shows the number and type of percutaneous valve procedures done at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute over the past three years. Studies suggest that for many surgical procedures, hospitals that perform high volumes have better quality outcomes, i.e. lower short-term and long term mortality and morbidity1. Volume is an indicator of experience, which influences outcomes in multiple ways. In addition to the experience of surgeons in performing specific procedures, high volume hospitals may institute specific care processes that improve outcomes and have the infrastructure dedicated to particular clinical specialties, including related technology and intensive care personnel. Commitment to quality standards throughout the institution is also an important determinant of better outcomes2,3. In addition, outcomes for high-risk procedures have been shown to be better when performed by more highly-trained surgeons than by general surgeons.
These data were provided by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), and reflect only procedures which were the primary procedure for the patient. If a patient had other procedures performed at Cedars-Sinai, the percutaneous valve procedure may not be captured in the numbers below. The actual number of these procedures performed at Cedars-Sinai may be higher.
