Appropriate Blood Clot Prevention Treatment Given

Certain types of surgery carry of risk of a patient developing blood clots.* Different types of treatment can be used to help prevent blood clots. Treatment can be blood-thinning drugs, special stockings or mechanical devices for exercising the legs.

The chart below reports the percentage of surgical patients who were given the type of blood clot-preventing treatment that experts recommend for their type of surgery.

* It is important to note that not every surgery requires treatment to prevent blood clots. The data presented here reflect those selected surgeries where evidence has shown that treatment to prevent blood clots has benefits.
