Research Focus

Development of high throughput genotyping, data handling, principal components and pathway analysis, and gene annotation methods for genome wide association studies. Focus on identifying genes and pathways leading to inflammatory bowel disease in the Caucasian and Puerto Rican populations.

Research Contributions

Identified the population attributable risk of the IL23R gene to IBD and of the genes of the IL17-IL23 pathway as major contributors to disease. Demonstrated the "hygiene hypothesis" for IBD in Puerto Rico--that the lack of exposure to pathogens in childhood increases risk for IBD in this developing region.

Current investigations include:

Currently investigating the role of numerous pathways leading to sub-sets of inflammatory bowel disease.
