Research Focus

Basic research in respiratory muscle physiology and cell biology with specific emphasis on the effects of emphysema on diaphragm structure and function, undernutrition on respiratory muscles, hormonal and pharmacologic influences on respiratory muscles, diaphragm development and mechanisms responsible for these influences. Major interest in biochemical mechanisms underlying disordered muscle protein turnover and muscle fiber atrophy in cachectic states.

Research Contributions

Described the effect of emphysema on the functional and morphometric properties of the diaphragm. Described in a variety of models biochemical muscle dertminants of the actions of anabolic steroids on skeletal muscle. Described signaling pathways of importance in disordered protein turnover in cachectic states.

Current investigations include:

Biochemical and molecular mechanisms responsible for respiratory and limb muscle fiber atrophy in states of acute undernutrition. Signaling of synthetic and proteolytic pathways in muscle ; transgenic and knockout models, muscle cell cultures; genetic and pharmacologic manipulation of signaling pathways; gene electroporation
