Dr. Shirin Towfigh is a faculty member in the Division of General Surgery and the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery. Before joining Cedars-Sinai, Dr. Towfigh was Assistant Professor of Surgery and Director of the Medical Student Clerkship in the University of Southern California's Department of Surgery, Emergency Surgery Service and Minimally Invasive Surgery Program.
Dr. Towfigh performs advanced laparoscopic surgery, with a specialty in complex hernia repair. She is a nationally recognized leader in hernia surgery. She is on the board of directors of the American Hernia Society and editorial board of the journal Hernia among others. She has a strong research background and will be adding to the clinical trials activity at Cedars-Sinai. Dr. Towfigh has been Principal Investigator of 20 research projects with more than $2.5 million in funding.
Dr. Towfigh is foremost a Surgical Educator, having received 16 awards from residents and medical students for her excellence in teaching. She will continue her role in Surgical Education in the Department of Surgery by directing the Medical Student Education Program as well as enhancing the Surgical Skills Curriculum.
Dr. Towfigh received her bachelor's degree at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), medical degree at the University of California, San Diego, and completed her general surgery training at UCLA in 2002. She is board certified in general surgery.
