Ali Khoynezhad, MD, PhD, FACS, FACC, is Director of Thoracic Aortic Surgery and Associate Professor of Surgery at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute. Prior to joining Cedars-Sinai, Dr Khoynezhad was an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery and the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska.
As a board-certified cardiovascular surgeon, he performs all aspects of cardiac surgery, specializing in complex open and hybrid aortic and endovascular surgery. This includes aortic valve and root repair and replacement, aortic arch reconstructions, thoracoabdominal and abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. Dr Khoynezhad is an internationally recognized leader in the treatment aortic aneurysms and dissections. He is an active industry consultant and has been the principle investigator for six industry-sponsored clinical trials involving current and future generations of aortic stent grafts and cardiac devices.
Dr Khoynezhad’s research findings been published in over 80 peer-reviewed medical journals and book chapters and his discoveries have resulted in inventions and patents. He is the editor of the Endovascular Portal of CTSNet and serves as reviewer for Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Annals of Thoracic Surgery and The European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Dr Khoynezhad serves on many medical committees and is a member of over 22 professional organizations. He is a national trainer for minimal-invasive aortic repair, having trained over 500 surgeons and interventionalists in abdominal and thoracic endovascular aortic repair. He has published several continuing education programs and has organized or served as faculty or director for more than 15 varied continuing education courses.
Dr. Khoynezhad is the recipient of numerous honor and awards including Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Marquis Who’s Who in America. The Consumers Research Council of America named him one of America’s leading surgeons in America’s Top Surgeons. He has made frequent media appearances as a recognized expert in cardiovascular health and has presented and lectured regularly at national and international conferences.
After earning his bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of Cologne College of Medicine in Köln, Germany, Dr. Khoynezhad earned his doctorate from the Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany. He completed an internship in general surgery at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and a residency in general surgery at the North Shore University-Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New Hyde Park, New York. He performed a cardiothoracic surgery residency at Montefiore Medical Center Affiliated Hospitals, Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, a minimal-invasive cardiac surgery fellowship at Lenox Hill Hospital and a vascular and endovascular surgery fellowship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance.
