Training & Curriculum
At Cedars-Sinai, rheumatology fellows have sufficient time and freedom for self-directed educational activities in addition to an exceptional amount of structured didactics and mentorship from our dedicated faculty. Our patient population is ethnically and socioeconomically diverse, and we collaborate with outstanding specialists in providing state-of-the-art care to our patients.
- Fellows are expected to participate in rotating weekly conferences including journal clubs, case conferences, rheumatology/radiology conferences and grand rounds as well as dedicated didactic sessions.
- A musculoskeletal examination and joint injection course is offered early in the academic year. This is a fun, interactive course with hands-on experience. We correlate the physical exam and anatomy with soft tissue rheumatism and joint disease.
- An ultrasound course begins in the fall and continues throughout the year to enhance the fellows' musculoskeletal knowledge and clinical skills
First Year
- Inpatient service. Direct, supervised clinical care at Cedars-Sinai and one-month rotation at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
- Outpatient continuity-of-care clinics. These include: Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Saban Community Clinic, Venice Family Clinic and our outpatient fellows' clinic at Cedars-Sinai.
- Scholarly activities. Fellows explore ideas and research projects under the mentorship of our faculty.
Second Year
During their second year, fellows take advantage of unique opportunities to learn in a diverse array of settings, ranging from safety-net clinics to faculty practices, including private practice offices of selected attending staff for a better understanding of how real-world rheumatologic care is administered.
- Outpatient clinic rotations. These include: Wadsworth Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Cedars-Sinai Faculty Practice, Saban Community Clinic, Venice Family Clinic and outpatient fellows clinic at Cedars-Sinai.
- Attendance to associated specialty clinics. These include: orthopaedics, radiology, rehabilitation medicine and neuromuscular disease.
- Elective rotation in pediatric rheumatology at Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
- Research time. Fellows will be provided with dedicated time to pursue their research projects with the ultimate goal of presenting and publishing their results during the course of fellowship program.
For those interested in a clinical, translational and basic research career, our fellowship offers an academic track, which includes a third year of fellowship training and participation in the
Clinical Scholars Program, which provides education, career guidance, pilot study funding and promotes skill acquisition for aspiring clinician-scientists. In addition, through Cedars-Sinai's partnership in the UCLA Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), there is the possibility to apply to a Masters in Clinical Research with tuition support.
