Training & Curriculum

For fellows who elect to follow the cardiac track for American Board of Thoracic Surgery certification, the first year is divided between six months on general thoracic surgery and six months on cardiac surgery.
Clinical assignments in the first year allow the fellow to develop the knowledge and operative skills to assure chief-level responsibilities in the second year. Fellows are involved in all aspects of patient care, including preoperative evaluation, intraoperative decisions, postoperative care and follow-up. Direct faculty supervision is maintained at all times.
In the second year, the cardiac surgery/thoracic surgery track fellow spends a year as chief fellow on the cardiac surgery service. The fellow is expected to operate on complicated and difficult patients and oversee the care of the patients on the service. In addition, the fellow is expected to teach and supervise the first-year fellow and any other fellows on the service.
