Facilities & Resources
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is a 900-bed community hospital with a large number of challenging and unusual cases of demyelinating disease and MS mimics including transverse myelitis, neuromyelitis optica, tumefactive MS and neurosarcoidosis. Neuroimmunology/MS fellows regularly staff inpatient consults (on average of two to three per month) for these interesting cases and presents them in weekly and monthly multidisciplinary clinical case conferences. The Cedars-Sinai Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology Center currently sees over 400 patients per year, of which 30% are new patients. The center is housed in the newly completed Advanced Health Sciences Pavilion on the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center campus, has a dedicated MS nurse and is a designated Comprehensive Care Clinic of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers. Services available include psychiatry consultative service housed in the center, lumbar puncture clinic and a designated neuro-ophthalmologist with expertise in OCT.
California Rehabilitation Institute
An important part of the fellowship training will be exposure to inpatient rehabilitation. At Cedars-Sinai, the fellow will have the opportunity to rotate through the California Rehabilitation Institute (CRI), a free-standing, 134-bed medical rehabilitation hospital staffed by physiatrists and neurologists. The multidisciplinary team includes neurology and physiatry residents, PT, OT, speech therapy, pain management, neuropsychology, psychiatry and social work services. In addition, fellows will attend the outpatient spasticity clinic that offers procedures including Botox administration and intrathecal baclofen pumps.
Underserved Populations
The fellow will treat traditionally underserved populations at Cedars-Sinai outpatient clinics including Latino and African American patients (approximately 25% of total clinic patients), patients with progressive forms of MS (approximately 30% of clinic patients), and the economically disadvantaged population at the Venice Family Clinic. Nancy Sicotte, MD, sees under- and uninsured patients in a monthly evening neurology subspecialty clinic at the Venice Family Clinic. The patient population includes several MS patients who are seen on a regular basis. The fellow will have the opportunity to attend this clinic and learn the challenges of managing MS in this setting.
Interested fellows will have the opportunity to rotate with rheumatology, urology, neuro-ophthalmology or attend Botox injection clinics.
