Choi Lab
The Choi Lab specializes in cellular and molecular biology, with a particular emphasis on lung immunology. Our research delves into the intricacies of lung-resident mast cells and alveolar macrophages, exploring their roles in the progression of inflammatory lung diseases such as asthma and lung fibrosis. We center our investigations on understanding how innate immune regulators initiate cell signaling to modulate lung inflammation and fibrosis. Our comprehensive approach involves utilizing diverse cell-based assays, in vivo animal models of asthma and lung fibrosis and translational research in lung immunology.
Personal Statement
As a pharmacist with a PhD in immunology, I have multidisciplinary background encompassing clinical insights, research skills, collaborative strategies and expertise in innate immunity and lung inflammation. By focusing on innovative research strategies, my current work targets inflammatory lung diseases such as asthma and lung fibrosis."

Breakthrough Research
Our research objective is to establish an interdisciplinary program investigating innate immune response in the respiratory system. We are unraveling how these responses influence allergic and inflammatory lung diseases, with a specific focus on lung-resident mast cells and alveolar macrophages. We aim to develop novel therapeutic strategies for conditions like asthma and lung fibrosis. Current research projects include:
- Understanding lung mast cell-specific innate immune responses in chronic asthma
- Understanding alveolar macrophage-specific innate immune responses in pulmonary fibrosis
- Developing therapeutic inhibitors for treating inflammatory lung diseases.
