Mathur Lab
Ruchi Mathur, MD, in collaboration with Mark Pimentel, MD, and Ali Rezaie, MD, helps lead the MAST Program to find better treatments for the conditions related to the microbiome.
Specifically, Mathur studies the effects of gastrointestinal microbiota on metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes. Defining the role of specific gut flora in the development of obesity and insulin resistance as well as understanding the effects of the intestinal microbiome on metabolism is one of her team’s main focuses. In addition to gut bacteria, Mathur and her team also research polycystic ovary syndrome and the clinical phenotyping of this disorder.
The areas of greatest interest and work in the MAST Program include motility disorders of the GI tract, SIBO, IBS, metabolic diseases (such as obesity and diabetes) and many others, as they relate to the microbiome.
Personal Statement
As an academic endocrinologist, I have a specific interest in the relationship between the gastrointestinal tract and the endocrine system. My early projects focused on gastric myoelectrical activity and glycemic control. In collaboration with researchers in the Division of Gastroenterology, we published the first paper confirming a clinical association with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)."

Breakthrough Research Areas
Ruchi Mathur, MD, studies the effects of gastrointestinal microbiota on metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes. Defining the role of specific gut flora in the development of obesity and insulin resistance is a focus of Mathur’s research, as well as understanding the effects of the intestinal microbiome on metabolism and other medical conditions. In addition to the small intestinal microbiome, the Mathur Lab also studies polycystic ovary syndrome and the clinical phenotyping of this disorder.
