Shimada Lab
The research goals of the Shimada Laboratory are to determine the crosstalks of damage DNA response and inflammation, as well as oxidative stress and senescence in diseases progress. The Shimada Lab investigates the role of autophagy/mitophagy and IL-1 signaling in lipopolysaccharide plus ventilator induced acute lung injury, and the role of protein citrullination in Kawasaki disease vasculitis. Long term, the Shimada Lab will leverage this knowledge and findings to develop novel therapies and interventions.
The Shimada Laboratory is affiliated with the Infectious and Immunologic Diseases Research Center, Department of Biomedical Sciences and the Pediatrics Department.
Personal Statement
Kenichi Shimada, PhD, has diverse scientific training in microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, lipid biochemistry and host-pathogen interactions. He completed his PhD studying how glycolipids of mycobacterium modulates the pathogenesis of mycobacterium infection and host responses. His postdoctoral research investigated the role of intracellular pathogen associated molecular patterns, Nod1/Nod2 and RIP2 in Chlamydia pneumoniae airway infection in the Arditi Laboratory. Shimada’s Chlamydia infection studies led to his recent seminal finding that oxidative mitochondrial DNA activates NLRP3 inflammasome. Research in the Shimada Lab is supported by NIH grants.
