Vujkovic-Cvijin Lab
The Vujkovic-Cvijin Lab investigates how human gut microbes influence inflammatory diseases. Research in the lab is focused on integration of omics technologies and lies at the intersection of immunology, microbiology and computational biology.
Personal Statement
The gut microbiota—the community of bacteria, fungi, viruses and protists that inhabit our intestines—has a profound impact on the way our body functions. The primary goal of my lab is to better understand how these microbes affect us, and to harness that relationship for improving human health. We use microbiology, immunology, ecology and data science techniques to identify microbes that spur inflammation, and in turn, devise ways of therapeutically targeting them for clinical benefit."

Breakthrough Research
- Identifying inflammatory gut microbes—We leverage the human antibody repertoire to identify microbes that may play causal roles in diseases including inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, and others.
- Precision microbiome editing—A major challenge in translating microbiome science to the clinic is the lack of tools to safely and effectively modulate the gut microbiome. We use data science and biostatistics to identify compounds capable of modulating the gut microbiota.
- Multi-omics integration—We use high-resolution profiling of the human immune system and the human microbiome to better understand how these two complex systems impact each other.
