Training & Curriculum
Clinical Rotations
Fellows will spend 18 months rotating on the reproductive endocrinology and infertility services at Cedars-Sinai and Southern California Reproductive Center (SCRC). During the 12-month rotation at Cedars-Sinai, they will participate in our daily outpatient consultative services.
Fellows will become proficient in outpatient procedures including:
- Transvaginal ultrasound
- Intrauterine inseminations
- Mock embryo transfers
- Saline sonograms
They will have the opportunity to participate in oocyte retrievals and observe embryo transfers. Fellows also will assist our faculty in minimally invasive reproductive surgeries and will play an integral role in decisions to proceed with surgery, and in pre-operative, operative and post-operative care. At Cedars-Sinai, fellows will rotate on associated specialty services including:
- Male infertility
- Genetics
- Medical endocrinology
- Pediatric endocrinology.
At SCRC, fellows will work closely with attending physicians in an outpatient clinical setting where they will be exposed to a breadth of activities including new and follow-up patient consultations, managing infertility treatment cycles, in-vitro fertilization procedures and outpatient surgery. Additionally, they will spend time in the embryology laboratory and gain exposure to procedures such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection, embryo biopsy, assisted hatching and vitrification of oocytes and embryos.
Research
This fellowship will include 18 months of dedicated research time. Our department and division are committed to clinical and translational research with federal funding, with multiple opportunities for fellows to conduct research. Within the division, fellows may conduct research in the NIH-funded Pisarska lab.
Fellows may pursue advanced degree opportunities, including obtaining a master of public health, master of science in clinical research or PhD. The research environment and multitude of opportunities provide an outstanding platform for scientific development and mentorship.
Didactics
The clinical and research training are augmented by a robust weekly didactic curriculum to cover topics from the reproductive endocrinology and infertility competency areas. Seminars will include research presentations, review of literature to develop new areas of research interest, and sessions dedicated to research design, scientific writing and presentation skills.
Fellows will participate in monthly journal clubs to learn critical appraisal of the literature. They also participate in weekly patient case conferences to discuss patients who are in-cycle for assisted reproductive technologies, as well as patients who have had recent unsuccessful cycles, to foster continuous improvement in patient care through self-evaluation and lifelong learning.
