Preparing for Your Internship
Once a candidate has been selected for an internship by the mentor, the Internship Program team will prepare the department and selected candidate for the internship. All candidates who are offered an internship role must complete several tasks before they can begin their internship.
Selecting a Start Date
Interns and visitors are only permitted to begin on select Mondays (see below). Mentors and interns should consult the start date calendar to select a date that works for both parties. When selecting a start date, the following factors must be considered:
- The start date must be at least three weeks away to ensure enough time to complete pre-appointment onboarding tasks.
- If the intern is receiving academic credit, the start date cannot be before their academic credit begins.

Accepting an Appointment Letter
Once a candidate is selected and a start date is confirmed, the Intern Program team will send the candidate an appointment letter that contains the details of their internship. Once the candidate accepts the appointment letter, they will begin the pre-appointment onboarding process.
Pre-Appointment Onboarding
All interns must complete and clear pre-appointment onboarding tasks prior to beginning their internship. Pre-appointment onboarding tasks include:
- Background check
- In-person health screening with Cedars-Sinai Employee Health Services, including documentation of required vaccinations.
- Flu and COVID-19 vaccination requirements: At Cedars-Sinai, we are dedicated to the safety, health and wellbeing of our patients and employees. This includes protecting our patients from communicable diseases, such as influenza (flu) and COVID-19. For this reason, we require that all new staff, including interns, receive a COVID-19 vaccine and flu vaccine (based on the seasonal availability of flu vaccine—typically, annually during September through April) as a condition of internship placement, subject to medical exemption or religious accommodation. Cedars-Sinai reserves the right to make modifications to its required list of vaccines as required by law and/or policy.
- Proof of I-9 and tax documentation: paid interns only
- New hire paperwork
The pre-appointment onboarding process can take three or more weeks. Helpful ways to expedite this process include:
- Bring your current health and immunization records to your health-screening appointment with Employee Health Services.
- Provide accurate dates of your education on the background check form from our third-party vendor.
Starting your Internship
Once you have cleared all required pre-appointment onboarding tasks, you will be able to complete New Employee Orientation on your selected start date. If you do not complete all onboarding items by their respective deadlines, your start date may be delayed.
Once you have completed your assigned online orientation modules and any other required training, you will be able to begin internship activities.
