Lab Members

Tomohiro Shibata, PhD, earned his doctorate at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan, in 2016. For the past decade, his research focus has been on molecular mechanisms underlying tumor progression associated with inflammation and drug resistance. He joined the Khan Lab in 2021 as a visiting project scientist. Shibata’s main interest is to understand how angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) influences the functional maturation of myeloid-derived cells including neutrophils and macrophages, and development of cancer immunotherapy.    

Shabir Bhat, PhD, received his doctorate in biotechnology from the Institute of Microbial Technology, India. During his doctoral research, he studied and developed fluorescence-based methods to investigate the bacterial metabolic response during infection using genetically encoded sensors. His work in the Khan Lab focuses on developing novel strategies to modulate the functions of myeloid-derived immune cells.

Adithi Rao is a molecular, cell and developmental biology major at UCLA. She’s in her third year of undergrad, and plans to earn a PhD. She is interested in research because it allows her to expand her knowledge, improve her skills and contribute to something bigger.

Biona Hui is a third-year undergraduate student in biochemistry at UCLA. She is currently working toward attending medical school in the future with a combined MD-MS degree in biomedical sciences.

Samuel Zamora is a third-year BS student in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics. He is preparing for a graduate research program.
