Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology
Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency
The goals of this rotation are to:
- Gain knowledge of the pathology of neoplastic disorders that affect the luminal GI tract, liver and pancreas, including clinical aspects of these disorders
- Gain knowledge of the pathology of non-neoplastic disorders that affect the luminal GI tract, liver and pancreas, including clinical aspects of these disorders
Case Mix
The GI and liver service is a volume-heavy rotation with a large variety of cases, covering the full spectrum of adult, pediatric, medical and neoplastic diseases of the digestive system. It provides more than 10,000 tubular GI biopsies, 1,000 large gastrointestinal resections (including esophagus, stomach, small bowel and colon), 600 liver biopsies, 200 liver resections and 50 Whipple/pancreatectomy specimens annually. We are also a transplant center where we have, on average, 70 liver explants per year. Specimens come from well-established specialty areas at Cedars-Sinai, including the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center, Colorectal Cancer Center, Cancer Institute, Liver Disease and Transplant Center, as well as the Pancreatic and Biliary Diseases Program and the Carcinoid and Neuroendocrine Tumor Program.
Rotation Structure
This one-month rotation consists of two weeks of GI large specimens and biopsies, and two weeks of GI biopsies and liver.
Residents are involved in the daily workload examining tissue specimens, constructing pathology reports, communicating with clinicians, and providing top-quality patient care in a three-day cycle:
- Day 1
- Gross GI surgical specimens
- Day 2
- Morning: Preview and sign-out GI biopsies
- Afternoon/Evening: Preview and write-up grossed GI surgical specimens
- Day 3
- Sign-out grossed GI surgical specimens
- Sign-out grossed GI surgical specimens
Subspecialty Conferences
Residents are encouraged to attend several monthly GI-related clinicopathologic conferences during rotations. These conferences provide excellent opportunities to interact with clinicians and to enrich our knowledge about clinical management of a variety of GI disorders. These conferences include:
- Colorectal tumor board, first Wednesday
- IBD case conference every Wednesday
- Pancreatic/biliary conference, third Tuesday
- Neuroendocrine conference, third Tuesday
- Small bowel conference, second Thursday
- Esophageal conference, fourth Thursday
- GI pathology conference for GI fellows and gastroenterologists, second and fourth Wednesday
- GI pathology consensus conference, daily after consensus conference
Research Opportunities
There are ample opportunities for clinical or translational research in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, the Digestive Diseases Center, and the pancreaticobiliary and hepatology programs.
