Training
Clinical training takes place in a variety of inpatient and outpatient practice settings while caring for a diverse patient population. Individualized curriculum is promoted to assist residents in achieving personal career goals.
Inpatient Training
At Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Guerin Children’s is a tertiary and quaternary pediatric center that provides comprehensive pediatric care, including general pediatrics and the entire spectrum of pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties.
- General Pediatric Wards: This 26-bed, newly opened medical-surgical unit cares for patients with the most common general pediatric conditions extending to the most complex pediatric patients.
- Newborn Medicine: A robust Level III neonatal nursery experience, including newborn care and resuscitations, serving a busy delivery service of approximately 7,000 babies each year.
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU): This 45-bed, state-of-the-art Level IV (highest) NICU serves one of the busiest delivery services on the West Coast, while also a major referral destination for the region.
- Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU): This 14-bed critical care unit provides the most advanced life-sustaining interventions and expansive services, satisfying Pediatric Medical Center (PMC) designation.
Outpatient Training
Ambulatory training is provided at a variety of clinical settings, providing amazingly diverse and enriching outpatient clinical experiences.
- Cedars-Sinai Maxine Dunitz Children’s Health Center: This multidisciplinary outpatient center hosts numerous pediatric subspecialty and surgical clinics.
- Saban Community Clinic: The Saban Clinic is a Federally Qualified Health Care (FQHC) center, serves as the primary pediatric continuity clinic site, and has achieved the honor of Patient-Centered Medical Home Level 3 Recognition.
- Harbor-UCLA Medical Center: Caring for well over 20,000 pediatric encounters per year, Harbor-UCLA is a Los Angeles County Level II pediatric trauma center serving as the primary site for pediatric emergency medicine.
Individualized Curriculum
Residents will be able to pursue a flexible curriculum with up to seven blocks (28 weeks) of personal elective choices to advance individualized career interests and development in the PGY-2 and PGY-3 years:
- Additional Clinical Electives: In addition to protected elective time, residents can pursue additional experiences in primary care or subspecialty pediatrics based on career interest.
- Research/Quality Improvement: Residents will be able to pursue additional protected academic time to develop scholarly work on novel projects or collaborate with faculty on established research.
- Senior Year Continuity Clinic: The option to move continuity clinic into an outpatient area of interest based on career goals will be made available to PGY-3 residents.
- Community and/or Global Health: Opportunities to explore engagement at the community level and/or an enriching international experience will be offered to all of our trainees.
