Shiao Lab
The Shiao Lab explores the fundamental question of how the immune system regulates the response to cancer therapies. We are interested in defining the interactions between different immune cells and non-immune cells in the tumor microenvironment to understand how these interactions restrain anti-tumor immunity induced by cytotoxic therapies including radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapies, checkpoint inhibitors and cellular therapies.
Personal Statement
Stephen received his MD and PhD from Yale University School of Medicine with Dr. Jordan Pober as his mentor. Subsequently, he completed his residency in Radiation Oncology at the University of California, San Francisco where he joined the laboratory of Dr. Lisa Coussens as a Holman Research Fellow. In the Coussens lab, he studied the role of macrophages in regulating the response to radiation and chemotherapy in breast cancer. Currently, as the principal investigator of the Shiao Lab, he leads our team in exploring the role of the immune system in regulating the response to cancer therapies.

Breakthrough Research
Our overall hypothesis is that the immune system shapes and regulates the response to cancer therapies including cytotoxic and immune therapy. Our current research focuses on four main projects:
- Macrophage Regulation and Anti-Tumor Immunity
- Microbiome and Radiation-induced Anti-Tumor Immunity
- Impact of Radiation and Immunotherapy on the Tumor Immune Microenvironment
- Microglia and Anti-Tumor Neuroimmunity
