Targan Lab
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) refers to a spectrum of complex gastrointestinal disorders, with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis representing opposite ends of the spectrum. Stephan R. Targan, MD, leads the Targan Laboratory and is director of the Cedars-Sinai Inflammatory Bowel and Immunobiology Research Institute. In these roles, his mission is to use translational research concepts and sophisticated data analytics to research IBD from all angles. The goal is to accelerate findings at the research bench and develop treatments beneficial in patient care.
The Targan Laboratory seeks to define the functional relationships between genes, the environment and the immune response to translate these discoveries into a better understanding of the underlying causes of IBD and improved therapies.
The Targan Laboratory is affiliated with the Cedars-Sinai Inflammatory Bowel and Immunobiology Research Institute, Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center, Medicine Department and Precision Health.
Personal Statement
I have been engaged in the study of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) for four decades and have been treating patients with IBD during this time. My research interests span clinical, basic and translational research and are primarily focused on immunopathologic mechanisms, discovery of novel therapeutics and the translation of basic science and genetic findings for use in diagnosis, prognosis and targeted therapeutic selection in IBD. My goal is to combine all of these areas so that the right patient gets the right treatment at the right time and in the right way."
